Micromachining Design Guidelines

Micromachining uses traditional material removal processes combined with state of the art milling and turning technologies, thus resulting in extremely small parts. Micromachining technologies can work with a variety of materials. Metals are most commonly used for micro precision parts, with typical part features of less than 1mm!

Micro-Turning & Micro-Milling

Micromachining performs generally the same as traditional machining, but does this at an extremely small scale. Micro-turning will remove material from a part by rotating about an axis, and is therefore used to make micro cut out features that are symmetric about that axis. Micro-milling is a process that moves material into a rotary cutting bit, and hence creating cut out features by material removal. Multi-axis micromachining allows for cutting of extremely precise features about multiple axes, and as a result can produce parts with extremely small and complex geometries. Surface finishes are typically as machined, however can be precision ground upon specification. We provide material certification and certification of compliance upon request.

Micro Scale Dimensions and Tolerances

We hold micromachined tolerances as low as ± .0001″, with typical part tolerances of ± .0005″. We specialize in parts that are extremely small, and hence are able to best serve customers with part features on a scale of under .010″, and as small as .001″.

Standard Materials

Micromachined parts can be made from a variety of metals and plastics, such as:

  • Stainless Steel
  • Titanium
  • Platinum
  • Aluminum
  • Copper
  • Brass

300 series stainless steel is a common material of choice. You may also choose to source your own bar stock of material for machining. Bar stock must be a maximum 1mm in diameter and minimum 500mm in length, and must additionally be very straight in order for proper machining.
