Just How Small Are The Smallest Microcoils Ever Made?

These microcoils are the smallest known in existence!

microcoil up close

This microcoil is incredibly tiny, with an outer diameter that measures as small as 0.027 millimeters (or .001″). Indeed this measurement is of the OD, in contrast to the Wire Diameter, which is on the scale of a few microns!

Just how small are these microcoils?

Because it’s hard to get a sense of just how tiny these parts are from the image above via scanning electron microscope. Below are some comparisons to depict just how small these parts are.

A microcoil with outer diameter of 27µm is about 1/25th the size of the smallest Carpenter Ants.

Or in other words, one Ant is over 40x larger than these microcoils!

A microcoil with outer diameter of 27µm is about 1/10th the size of a single grain of salt.

Why this coiling technology is a game changer

Innovative use of microcoils for endovascular aneurysm have resulted in life saving technologies. As these parts become smaller and smaller, more possibilities arise as a result in treating our most challenging healthcare problems. These endovascular coils can be made from a variety of biocompatible materials. Moreover, their small size allows for treating the most difficult areas of the body including neurovascular and more.
